There has been a remarkable revival of finite-state methods in linguistics over the last twenty-five years. This renewed interest is a direct consequence of the pioneering work on two-level phonology and morphology by Kimmo Koskenniemi (Koskenniemi, 1983) and of the independently developed approach.
